Holland, 1959

Roy Wenzel was born in 1959 and in his childhood was diagnosed with autism. He lives in his retired brother’s family home and attends a day centre. He has been drawing since he was eleven. Since he is almost incapable of speech, drawing is his primary means of communication. He talks to his figures as he draws them. Usually he depicts himself as a small child, mouth wide open, as in a loud scream. His vehement emotions are evident from the often intense expressiveness of the work. Wenzel’s work is currently part of several collections of art brut, including the Collection de l’Art Brut Lausanne.
