Dors, Mirabelle
Moldova, 1913 - France, 1991
Mirabelle Dors moved to Paris in 1952, and was welcomed by André Breton into the Surrealist group, together with Man Ray, Max Ernst, Giacometti, etc. In 1954, she married Maurice Rapin, a scientist and painter, and became friends with Magritte and founded the magazine, “Tendance Populaire Surréaliste”. Mirabelle Dors created sculptures from celluloid dolls, resin and random found objects. Mirabelle Dors represents sarcophagi, death masks, trussed and bewitched babies, painted in monochrome or gentle colours, revealing a subterranean and tortured fantasy world.
